Bettina and Peter Ambühl start the MEDiDOR company history on a small scale in the mountain village of Arosa. Inspired by the philosophy and effectiveness of the SISSEL brand during their travels to Sweden, the couple decide to make the medical neck support pillow known in Switzerland. The combination of the words "MEDi" for medical and "DOR" for the French "dormir" is the expression of the neck pillow, which is still a core product of the company today.
The demand for the SISSEL neck pillow soon becomes so great that the Fiat Uno is too small for the business activities and the Arosa site is too decentralized. With the imminent move to Aesch ZH, the partnership is converted into a public limited company in 1993. In addition to medical aids for sleeping, MEDiDOR's product range is supplemented by products for sitting, moving and well-being.
Gymnastic balls, seat and lumbar cushions were added, soon followed by a range of products in the area of practice equipment and consumer goods. From 1998, customers from the therapy, rehabilitation and medical sectors have a fully developed product range in therapy and practice equipment at their disposal.
In 2002, the SISSEL sales structure is reorganized and MEDiDOR joins the international SISSEL network. In 2004, healthcare professionals and private individuals can now purchase therapy, rehabilitation, fitness and wellness products in the online store www.sissel.ch.
The MEDiDOR Academy is launched in summer 2010. The aim of the Academy is to offer courses by professionals for professionals in order to provide customers with additional professional support. A joint venture between the supplier K-Active Deutschland and MEDiDOR and K-Active GmbH, based in Aesch, is founded in 2013 to provide specialist training in the field of kinesiology taping.
In 2018, the online store www.sissel.ch is redesigned as a store for private customers, while at the same time www.medidor.ch for specialist customers is given a new look. Pilates and exercise professionals now have access to www.pilates.ch fitness, Pilates and exercise equipment.
In 2020, the founders Bettina and Peter Ambühl decide to hand over MEDiDOR to the Competec trading group, which offers new opportunities with its expertise in logistics and e-commerce. In the first quarter of 2021, the offices are relocated to Mägenwil and the warehouse to Willisau. The online stores will appear in mid-April 2021 www.medidor.ch and www.sissel.ch will be relaunched. This offers more opportunities for the 30-year-old company and is also a wonderful birthday present.
Following the successful integration of MEDiDOR into the Competec trading group, the MEDiDOR sales structure is being further developed. The range will be expanded with products for the entire practice operation, so that we can offer our partners everything for everyday therapeutic and operational use. Our mission is to support our partners in focusing on their work with people.
In 2024, the Competec Group decides to sell the company again. The sale is due to the significant differences in brand management, regulations, tariff structures and the expertise required at MEDiDOR compared to Competec's core business. A specialized provider in the healthcare sector can exploit MEDiDOR's potential much better. A private group of investors, led by former Competec CEO Martin Lorenz, is taking over Medidor AG. Operational responsibility will be assumed by Martin Lorenz, Robert Studer and Daniel Steiner together with the existing MEDiDOR team. This step enables MEDiDOR to concentrate fully on its core business again and to expand it further.
