People with weak foot dorsiflexion require a great deal of concentration to avoid tripping. Even the slightest unevenness in the ground becomes a danger zone. The almost automated movement process of "walking" presents those affected with a task that they have to perform consciously, step for . This is at the expense of their perception of their environment. It is very common for the foot to touch down with the forefoot or the entire sole of the foot rather than the heel first. A natural rolling movement of the foot and swinging the leg forward is no longer possible with foot drop. The affected person cramps up and walks abnormally, sometimes even with clawed toes. The leg is swung forward through a circular hip movement (circumduction). In the long term, sufferers who move in this way complain of pain in their hips and pelvis.
