Hygiene Protocol in Physical Therapy – What Really Matters

A systematic hygiene protocol protects patients from cross-contamination and therapists from occupational illnesses. In Switzerland, therapeutic practices are subject to the Infection Protection Act and cantonal regulations—a comprehensive hygiene protocol is not optional, but mandatory.

Disinfection (approx. 60 items)

Hand disinfection before and after each patient contact: The standard products are alcohol-based solutions such as Sterillium (Bode/Paul Hartmann) or Schülke Desderman – virucidal, bactericidal, contact time 30 seconds.

Surface disinfection for : for routine disinfection, we recommend aldehyde- and alcohol-free products (Schülke Mikrozid Sensitive), which are gentle on the table cover surface. for deep disinfection: Schülke Mikrozid AF.

Gloves and fingerless gloves (approx. 22 items)

Nitrile is now the standard in medical practices—low-allergen (latex-free), tear-resistant, and more chemical-resistant than vinyl. Powder-free versions help prevent skin irritation for the therapist. Finger cots are ideal for where only one finger needs to be protected—such as taping.

Hygiene covers and treatment table covers (approx. 27 items)

Disposable examination table covers made of medical crepe (40 g/m², 60 cm ) are the standard in medical practices—changed daily, no washing required, and no risk of cross-contamination. for committed to sustainability, washable non-woven or washable fiber sheets are a good option.

Respiratory protection and face protection

Type IIR surgical masks block droplets—the standard for cold symptoms. FFP2 masks protect the wearer from aerosols— for healthcare providers or at the request of the practice.

Which disinfectant should be used for ?

for cleaning: Schülke Mikrozid Sensitive or comparable PVC-compatible products. for deep cleaning: alcohol-based surface disinfectant (Mikrozid AF). If in doubt, check the material compatibility guidelines provided by the manufacturer of the treatment table.

How long does disinfectant last?

Unopened: 24–36 months from the date of manufacture. Once opened: 6–12 months, depending on the product—check the expiration date on the container and note the batch number (for ).

What size gloves should I use for practice?

Keep all standard sizes (S, M, L, XL) in stock. Powder-free nitrile gloves are standard. If there is a latex allergy (in the therapist or patient), use only nitrile or vinyl gloves.

Are the hygiene products CE-certified?

Yes. All medical devices are CE-certified. Disinfectants are approved in Switzerland as biocides under the ChemG.
