How does infrared radiation work therapeutically?

Infrared radiation in the 800–1,200 nm range penetrates 2–3 cm into the tissue—deeper than any form of contact heat. It dilates the capillaries, promotes blood circulation, and relaxes the muscles. The heat sensation is pleasant and even, without directly overheating the skin.

Instructions for Use

Distance: 30–50 cm the skin’s surface. Too close = risk of overheating; too far = no therapeutic effect.
Duration: 15–20 minutes per treatment, up to twice daily.
Safety goggles: Recommended when the face and head are exposed to direct radiation.

Contraindications

Acute inflammation, open wounds, sensory disturbances (diabetes, peripheral neuropathy), tumors in the treatment area, severe heart failure, and the immediate postoperative period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an infrared lamp replace heat therapy with hot packs?

Not exactly. Infrared lamps penetrate deeper and can be used without direct contact. Hot packs provide moist heat and are more comfortable for areas. Many clinics use a combination of both methods.
