Cold + Compression – Why the Combination Is More Effective

The Cryo/Cuff system works through two mechanisms simultaneously: Cold reduces local blood flow, inhibits inflammatory mediators, and has an analgesic effect. Compression additionally reduces hydrostatic pressure in the tissue, minimizes edema formation, and promotes venous return. Studies show that this combination reduces postoperative swelling significantly more effectively than cold or compression alone—which is why Cryo/Cuff has become the established standard following total knee replacement, shoulder surgery, and ankle procedures.

How does the Cryo/Cuff system work?

An insulated container is filled with water and ice and connected to the cuff by gravity. When the container is lifted, the cuff fills with ice water and simultaneously builds up compression pressure. The cooling effect lasts 4–8 hours, depending on how often the ice is replenished. No electric pump, no noise, easy to use—also suitable for after discharge.

Available cuffs

The system is available for major joints: knee (standard and universal), shoulder, ankle, foot, hand, and back. The cuffs are sold separately—one base unit is sufficient for entire practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should cold therapy last?

20–30 minutes for standard cold therapy. Thanks to continuous cooling, the Cryo/Cuff system can be used for longer periods—up to 6–8 hours daily postoperatively is clinically established.

When is cold therapy contraindicated?

For circulatory disorders (peripheral arterial disease), cold allergy, Raynaud's syndrome, sensory disturbances, and open wounds.

Is Cryo/Cuff also suitable for ?

Yes. The system is easy to use, and many patients are given one to continue treatment at home after discharge.
