What are hot packs—and why are they standard in physical therapy?

Hot packs consist of cotton covers filled with silica gel. Silica gel stores heat very efficiently and releases it evenly into the tissue over a period of 20–30 minutes. The heat release is more controlled than with grain pillows or electric heating pads—which is why hot packs are the standard in therapeutic applications.

In the Hydrocollator, the packs are heated to 70–75 °C, then placed in a terry cloth cover and applied to the affected area. Never apply directly to the skin without the cover—risk of burns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a hot pack stay warm?

Approx. 20–30 minutes—enough for standard treatment. After that, the pack needs 30–45 minutes in the Hydrocollator to reheat.

How are heat transfer fluids used in a hygienic manner?

Always use a separate terry cloth cover between the pack and the skin. Wash the covers after each use (60°C). Check the packs regularly for damage.

When should heat therapy not be used?

For acute inflammation, recent injuries (first 48 hours), sensory disturbances, and in the area being treated for tumors.
