Pulse oximeter – Quick and non-invasive measurement of oxygen saturation

A pulse oximeter (SpO2 monitor) clips onto the finger and uses light absorption (photoplethysmography) to measure blood oxygen levels and heart rate. Normal range: SpO2 ≥ 95%. A reading below 90% is considered clinically significant and requires medical evaluation.

Applications in physical therapy: before and after exercise tests for respiratory conditions (COPD, asthma), in cardiac rehabilitation, and to monitor exercise intensity in high-risk groups. In sports: to assess altitude acclimatization and guide training.

ECG machines – Monitoring heart rhythm

Modern single-channel ECG devices (Beurer) make it easy to record an ECG even outside the doctor’s office. Indications: Diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias, palpitations, dizziness, and fainting spells. The recorded trace can be forwarded to the doctor for evaluation.

How accurate are pulse oximeters?

High-quality devices measure SpO2 with an accuracy of ±2%—sufficient for guidance. The measurement may be inaccurate if you are wearing nail polish, are exposed to cold, or have poor circulation.

When should I use an ECG machine?

For patients with known cardiac arrhythmias as part of follow-up care; for patients with unexplained symptoms (heart palpitations, dizziness) prior to exercise therapy; and in cardiac rehabilitation.
