How does therapeutic ultrasound work?

Ultrasound devices use a piezoelectric transducer to generate high-frequency mechanical vibrations that penetrate the tissue. This results in two mechanisms of action: a thermal effect (deep tissue heating) and a mechanical effect (micromassage caused by vibrational pressure). Both promote blood circulation, metabolism, and healing processes.

1 MHz or 3 MHz – which one when?

Special active ingredient gels (e.g., containing diclofenac or hydrocortisone) allow medications to be administered transdermally. Phonophoresis combines mechanical action with local pharmacotherapy—a useful adjunct for superficial tendinopathies and inflammatory processes.

When is an ultrasound contraindicated?

Do not use on: the eyes, testicles, the pregnant uterus, growth plates in children, acutely inflamed tissue (continuous mode), tumors, or pacemakers. Metal implants are generally no longer considered an absolute contraindication.

How long does an ultrasound treatment take?

Typically: 5–10 minutes per area. Move the transducer slowly and evenly (about 2–3 cm second)—avoid holding it in one place to prevent local overheating.

How often does the transducer need to be calibrated?

Annual calibration by the manufacturer or an authorized service partner is recommended. The actual sound power may differ from the displayed value—regular checks ensure the quality of therapy.

How much does a professional ultrasound machine cost?

Entry-level devices with a single frequency start at around CHF 1,500. Devices with a switchable 1/3 MHz range cost between CHF 2,500 and 4,000. Multifunctional systems with ultrasound and electrotherapy can cost up to CHF 6,000.
