The rule of thumb is clear: Apply cold in the first 48 hours after an injury—then switch to heat. Heat relaxes muscles, dilates blood vessels, and increases tissue elasticity. Cold reduces blood flow and the inflammatory response, and has a decongestant and analgesic effect.
| Heat is indicated for | Cold therapy is indicated for |
|---|---|
| Chronic muscle tension | Acute injuries (RICE method) |
| Subacute symptoms (starting on day 3) | New inflammations |
| Before manual therapy and stretching | Postoperative swelling |
| Degenerative joint diseases | After high-intensity exercise |
Chattanooga hydrocollators heat hot packs to a constant temperature of 70–80 °C. Available in various capacities (6, 12, 24 packs) for Size different Size. Thermostat control keeps the temperature constant throughout the clinic day—no need for manual temperature adjustment.
The Cryo/Cuff system combines cold therapy and compression: an insulated container filled with an ice-water mixture, and cuffs for , shoulder, foot, and back. Continuous cooling for 6–8 hours—standard practice in postoperative care following total knee replacement and shoulder surgery.
Starting on the third day after an injury and for chronic conditions. Do not use in cases of acute inflammation, sensory disturbances (diabetics), or immediately following surgery.
20–30 minutes using a hot pack or hydrocollator. Using it for longer than 45 minutes offers little additional benefit and increases the risk of burns.
This combination has been shown to reduce postoperative swelling more effectively than cold therapy alone. The Cryo/Cuff system is therefore the standard of care in orthopedics following total knee replacement and shoulder surgery.
